What is it?
Safe Return Home ID Assist is an internet-based support system designed to assist individuals who are at risk of becoming lost or disorientated in the community. People can register themselves or their family or carer can do it for them.
How does it work?
Safe Return Home ID Assist consists of an internet database which stores relevant details to help with the location and identification of a person with dementia who is at risk of wandering. The system allows an immediate response to Police when a person with dementia goes missing.
Once police are informed that a person is missing (via phone or directly from the website), they can search the database and broadcast all the relevant data on the missing individual, including photo identification, to the relevant Police Units and other community and emergency services.
Alternatively, if a person who is not yet known to be missing, is found wandering and is unable to identify themselves, the Police can use the Safe Return Home system to identify the person and get in touch with their family or carers.

Who has developed it?
The Safe return Home ID Assist system has been developed by Applied Aged Care Solutions (AACS) after considerable interest, consultation and advice from a number of peak bodies serving the needs of a range of 'at risk' people and their carers. The system has been adopted by the Victorian Police in their protocols and procedures when a person is reported missing, or when a lost or confused person is found.
Is there a cost?
Yes - there is an annual fee of $65 (inclusive of GST) in order to be registered with the service. Members of Alzheimer's Australia Vic. who wish to register with Safe Return Home only need pay $44 (incl GST).

Is the information kept private?
Safe Return Home ID Assist offers a secure, confidential system for storing information that can be easily accessed in an emergency.

Do I have to be able to use a computer to use the system?
No. Although the information is stored on the internet, you don't have to use a computer to make use of the Safe Return Home ID Assist system. The staff at Safe Return Hom can organise registration and they can also assist you in case of an emergency.
