The Access Economics report Dementia Front of Mind: Incidence and Prevalence 2009 – 2050 showed that unless new therapeutic interventions are identified there will be 1.13 million Australians with dementia by 2050 and 7,400 new cases of dementia a week.

Alzheimer’s Australia’s Budget Submission for 2010 Dementia: facing the epidemic sets out the action needed by the Australian Government to respond to this challenge.  The submission reflects the priorities identified by Alzheimer’s Australia’s consumer advisory network.

Alzheimer’s Australia proposes an additional investment of $1 billion over five years to address the dementia epidemic in Australia, with an emphasis on encouraging community awareness and positive lifestyle choices, dramatically improving dementia care practice and outcomes, promoting equitable access to dementia care services and supporting cutting-edge research.

The four main elements of the proposal put forward by Alzheimer's Australia are:·

·                A national communication strategy to promote an understanding of dementia to reduce stigma and social isolation.

·                Investment in health infrastructure to achieve a reduction in the numbers of people with dementia through an investment in research, identification of those population groups most at risk and action to better inform Australians about how to reduce their risk of dementia.

·                Measures to promote quality dementia care through professional development and training, expansion of Dementia Behaviour and Management Advisory Services to provide advice to services on dementia care and the translation of research evidence into practice.

·                Improved access to care services and support for all people with dementia and family carers.
